This past September during\u00a0National Preparedness Month, the OYE! team decided to analyze Instagram to see what Hispanics and non-Hispanics said about preparing for natural disasters. OYE! looked specifically at natural disaster keywords in English and Spanish related to topics such as: Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Floods, Fires, Tropical Storms, and National Preparedness Month itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Hispanics on National Preparedness Month<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-187861 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/oyeintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fema-21-e1451340488339.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"743\" height=\"455\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hispanics on Instagram discussed\u00a0preparing for Earthquakes the most (62%) compared to non-Hispanics with only 10% on that disaster topic. Non-Hispanics more often mentioned preparing for Hurricanes as this was found to be their number one disaster topic (48%) compared to Hispanics who only mentioned preparing for Hurricanes with 18% of the overall\u00a0conversation.<\/p>\n<h3>Non-Hispanics on National Preparedness Month<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oyeintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fema-12-e1451340669764.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-187860 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/oyeintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fema-12-e1451340669764.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"794\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Non-Hispanics discussed Floods in\u00a029% of the disaster conversation during\u00a0National Preparedness Month while Hispanics had Floods as the third most common disaster topic\u00a0with 13% of the conversation. \u00a0As seen from the graph, Flooding was a more important topic for non-Hispanics while Hurricanes was more often a focus\u00a0for Hispanics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hispanics on National Preparedness Month in the US<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-187854\" src=\"http:\/\/oyeintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Hispanics-locations.png\" alt=\"Hispanics locations\" width=\"688\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OYE! also looked at the different locations in the US where conversation was taking place for Hispanics and non-Hispanics. Hispanics from the Florida area had the most mentions of\u00a0Hurricanes. In the southern California area, Floods was the most mentioned disaster\u00a0topic\u00a0among Hispanics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-Hispanics on National Preparedness Month in the US<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-187855 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/oyeintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Non-Hispanics-Locations-map.png\" alt=\"Non-Hispanics Locations map\" width=\"688\" height=\"395\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Non-Hispanic conversation on National Preparedness Month was scattered all around the west and east coast. In the California area there were mentions of Hurricane preparedness and on the East coast mentions concentrated on Hurricanes and Floods.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Hispanics and Non-Hispanics alike were most concerned with Hurricanes, Flooding, and Earthquakes however they differed in their order of concern by ethnicity.<\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p>This analysis\u00a0covers \u00a03,000 verified Hispanic conversations gathered from Instagram about the topic on National Preparedness Month. \u00a0A sample of over 2,000\u00a0general market conversations were analyzed as well to provide comparisons between ethnicity.
